RAF TYPE B FLYING HELMET, B STERLING & CO, 1935, SIZE 3
SOLD
For sale here is an extremely rare example of a 1935 dated Type B Flying Helmet, made by B Sterling & Co - the first production run made of this helmet. Size 3 (7 1/8 - 7 3/8). 22C/65.
As the photos indicate, this helmet has sadly seen better days. When I first purchased this helmet the leather had suffered from red rot and was continuing to rapidly deteriorate. I took the decision to treat it with archival-grade products in order to stop the rot and stabilise the leather. The result is a helmet that is still displayable, but obviously still very tatty.
The leather itself is rather dried out in places, but in the areas where the red rot had failed to penetrate the leather is still sound and flexible. The panels converging toward the top of the head have suffered the worst, exposing the internal padding.
The ear units have also suffered, but are fully completely with their original zips and AM marked cushions (which are rare to find in themselves).
Internally is where the helmet shines. The chamois is perfect, showing minimal signs of use. The silk label is stunning, showing 1935 manufacture and a large size 3.
Overall this an extremely rare survivor of the ubiquitous 1935 Sterling contract (the first awarded for the Type B) and an example every discerning Type B collector would hope to own. It may be possible to restore this helmet further, and I have no doubt it could make a stunning display piece. In better condition this helmet would be four times the price.
The price reflects the condition.
