RAF ORIGINAL STATION ENSIGN ‘FLAG’ - WW2

RAF ORIGINAL STATION ENSIGN ‘FLAG’ - WW2

SOLD

For sale is a rare, original example of an RAF Station Ensign ‘Flag’. 6’ x 3’ (175 x 86cm).

As the photos show, this ensign is an original wartime pattern made up from individually stitched panels in a woven cotton mix. It has clearly seen some use and is weather worn and faded, with a number of small holes and some frayed sections. Nonetheless, it still displays superbly.

There are some very faint markings on the ensign, which have faded through use. I have used a blacklight in the photos to try and make the markings clearer. I can just about make out a 4B/432 code; 6 x 3 size markings; a WD stamp, and another code underneath beginning 168. These are the correct markings an original should have, and not the spurious Air Ministry date stamps seen on the numerous fakes that sadly proliferate the market.

I originally purchased this ensign from the house clearance of an ex-63 squadron pilot (who served during WW2), however I was sadly never able to uncover his details.

A fantastic display piece, which would complement any RAF collection.
