RAF MARK IIIA FLYING GOGGLES - BATTLE OF BRITAIN

RAF MARK IIIA FLYING GOGGLES - BATTLE OF BRITAIN

SOLD

For sale are a lovely, early pair of RAF Mark IIIA Flying Goggles, synonymous with the Battle of Britain. 22C/62. 1935 dated.

This particular pair are in superb, displayable condition. The frames retain almost all of their original paint. Both frame stoppers are in place, as are both of the ‘vent’ horns. The rear velvet padding is excellent: still beautifully clean and nicely shaped, although the inner padding has hardened with age. The leather nose piece is excellent, as are the original lenses.

All frame screws are original, though one is missing. The only drawback these goggles have is that the hinge mechanism has broken. The break is clean and could likely be fixed (see pictures), though I have not attempted this myself. If fixed these goggles would be worth considerably more. I have not found this to affect how the goggles display.

The rear strap is excellent with lovely crisp markings and a superb, early manufacturing date of 1935. This is one of the earliest made pairs I have encountered. It appears the strap was shortened in service use.

Overall a superb pair of Battle of Britain era Mark IIIA Goggles.
