RAF MARK II FLYING "GOGGLES, LIGHTWEIGHT" - BATTLE OF BRITAIN
SOLD
For sale are a very rare pair of Mark II Flying goggles, correctly known as "Goggles, Lightweight, Flying". 22C/44.
An interwar pattern of goggles, the Mark II goggles can be seen in a plethora of photos from the Battle of Britain and continued to be used well into WW2, particularly in the MTO where their lightweight frame and triplex lenses (sometimes tinted) proved popular.
This particular pair have light grey painted aluminium frames, which are much harder to come by than the blackened-brass iteration. The frames have some scuffs but are otherwise sound, and the hinge (often broken) still functions perfectly.
The knitted brown silk-cotton eye cups are a little sun-faded, but otherwise in excellent condition, as is the faux fur trim to the reverse.
The lenses are very clear, and have the distinctive XXX markings to denote triplex manufacture.
The leather strap is also in fine shape, and the chamois cover to the springs is excellent and clean. The springs themselves function perfectly. There are no discernible markings to speak of, and any AID stamp has long since faded. This appears to be the case with the majority of Mark IIs I have handled.
Overall an excellent, used pair of these very rare and iconic goggles. Perfect to complete a Battle of Britain collection.
