RAF B TYPE FLYING HELMET, FRANK BRYAN, 1939 - SIZE 4
SOLD
For sale here is a beautiful example of a rare, pre-war B Type Flying Helmet made by Frank Bryan. 1939 dated. Size 4 (6 7/8 - 7). 22C/65.
This particular helmet is straight out of my own private collection, and is a lovely example of a Frank Bryan Helmet in the rare and sought-after Size 4 (the largest size made). Size 4 helmets are very hard to come by these days, most likely because only limited numbers were produced.
Typical of this maker, the helmet is nicely padded, with dark, juicy leather and thick, strong straps. The overall condition is excellent, and inside the helmet shows very little service use with creamy, soft chamois leather and only light soiling. Both Bennett's buckles retain their leather covers; all zips operate smoothly, and both retain their leather pullers which feel nice and strong. The chin-strap still retains its original metal end-tip. The only flaws that I can see consist of a tiny hole next to the top of the central vent, and a potential repair to the left hand zipper where the zipper-tape meets the leather panel (pictured). The helmet is named 'JED' inside, and I have made no attempt to trace the individual.
The helmet is sold unwired, but does still retain the original sponge ear cushions, one feeling somewhat crusty but still flexible, and the other is still soft and supple. There are no receiver carriers inside the ear units, but their removal was a common modification as many pilots believed it made it easier to hear the RT.
This is an exceptional helmet which makes a great display piece, so synonymous with the Battle of Britain. A very rare helmet with this early date and extremely large size.
